CONTEXT OF THE MISSION
Handicap International (HI) has been working in Bangladesh, one of the poorest countries in South-Asia with one of the highest density of population in the world (160 million) since 1997, with a focus on creating sustainable changes in terms of ensuring rights and inclusion of people with disabilities in society. Currently HI Bangladesh is present in 4 sites: in Sitakunda, Chittagong, in Teknaf and Ukhiya in Cox’s Bazar, and in Kurigram.
Due to the scale of the crisis in Cox’s Bazar, as more than 500,000 people from the Rohingya minority have crossed the Myanmar border and taken refuge in Bangladesh, joining 300,000 to 500,000 Rohingyas already present in the country, HI has expanded its existing response in order to accommodate emergency needs. In this context, HI is conducting the following activities through mobile units and static points to Rohingya refugees and host communities:
• Provision of rehabilitation services
• Provision of psychological support
• Distributions of NFIs (shelter kits, wash kits, hygiene kits, protection kits) and food items
