Country Director – Dhaka – Save the Children

Save the Children is the world’s leading independent organisation for children. We work in 120 countries. We save children’s lives; we fight for their rights; we help them fulfil their potential.
We work together, with our partners, to inspire breakthroughs in the way the world treats children and to achieve immediate and lasting change in their lives.
We have over two million supporters worldwide and raised 1.9 billion dollars last year to reach more children than ever before, through programmes in health, nutrition, education, protection and child rights, also in times of humanitarian crises.
Following a major transition, our international programmes are now delivered through a merged operation with c15,000 staff, managed through seven regional hubs and reporting to a relatively small, central office. We’re changing to become more efficient, more aligned, a better partner, a stronger advocate, a magnet for world-class people and relevant for the 21st century.

CONTRACT LENGTH: Open-ended

The role:
Lead Save the Children’s international development and emergency programming in Bangladesh, with a budget of approximately $45 million, and a regular staff of approximately 650.
Save the Children globally seeks to bring about immediate and lasting change for children, in particular through achieving the following three breakthroughs for children globally by 2030:
• No child dies from preventable causes before their fifth birthday
• All children learn from a quality inclusive basic education
• Violence against children is no longer tolerated

To support achievement of these ambitious goals and breakthroughs for children, you will work with your leadership team to deliver on the agreed goal for Save the Children Bangladesh to:
• Identify the most deprived children in Bangladesh, and ensure that our programs and our advocacy includes a major emphasis on ensuring that these children are able to achieve their rights to health, education, protection and freedom from poverty
• Help to build a movement for change in how children are treated in Bangladesh, in particular changing social norms around child marriage and violence against children.
• Identify opportunities to bring about long-term, systemic change in national level policies, laws, budgets and programs that are relevant to children, and work with government, academia and civil society to make such changes a reality.
• Ensure the success of Save the Children’s major initiative on child malnutrition, the Suchana program.
• As Bangladesh continues its transition to a lower middle income country, identify emerging priority needs for children and ensure that Save the Children is well-placed to address those needs.
In order to do the above, you will lead the country office to increase the impact, quality and scale of programmes, including advocacy and campaigning, for and with children. In addition, you will work with the Save the Children movement more widely as a member of the regional leadership team.
